Outage Reduction and Response Initiative

We share the frustration over outages and the reliability of Puerto Rico’s fragile electric system, which has suffered from years – if not decades of mismanagement and neglect. We’ve heard our customers’ concerns and we are determined to improve the reliability of the energy system.

That is why we recently announced our Outage Reduction & Response Initiative, a bold new effort that will directly target and implement a series of immediate actions to address the root cause of power outages.

Our Actions to Date

31

new automation devices installed
(Goal of 100)

200+

new utility workers
(Goal of 400)

85

miles of critical lines clear
(Goal of 200 miles)

370

miles of power lines inspected
(Goal of 500 miles)

Time Since Initiative Launched: 611 days
This bold new initiative will directly target and implement a series of immediate actions to address the root cause of power outages. As a result of this new operational focus, we will  reduce outages experienced by customers by 55 Million Customer Minute Interruptions (CMI) in 90 days – which will represent a 20% improvement for highly impacted customers. The seven key organizational and operational actions that will define LUMA’s Outage Reduction and Response Initiative include:

  1. Establishing a New LUMA Outage Reduction Task Force that will lead the initiative and the operational effort to reduce outages across the system
  2. Increasing Outage Response Crews and Resources
  3. Enhancing Vegetation Management to target critical areas
  4. Installing New Automated Devices to reduce the number of customers impacted
  5. Increasing Inspections of Critical Substations and Lines that Serve Essential Services like hospitals and work with these facilities to assess status of back-up generation and resiliency
  6. Expanding Aerial Patrols of Key Lines with Thermal Imaging to identify and repair potential failure points
  7. Accelerating Inspections of Substations to identify and address issues
