The amount of power that solar panels produce varies constantly depending on the intensity of the sun, the time of day and weather conditions. When the day is cloudy, during the night and when it rains, the photovoltaic system produces very little to no current, so this deficit must be supplemented with current from LUMA’s grid, or by using energy stored in batteries.
If you purchase a rooftop solar system and have it installed by a licensed and certified Renewable Energy System Installer, you can register the system with us, and we will provide you with a special meter. The meter keeps track of the energy your system produces, as well as the energy you use from the grid. The meter data is used to calculate your bill giving you credit for the energy you produce. When your system produces more electricity than your home or business needs, that excess energy is exported to the electrical grid and credited back to you to use at another time. A credit will then be applied to the service agreement once per year for the previous 12 months.
